Discover a Watershed: The Colorado Expedition Information Discover a Watershed: The Colorado is currently seeking 10-12 outstanding college students from the U.S. and Mexico to participate in the field course/expedition. Selected students will travel the length of the Colorado River basin during 5-6 weeks in June-July 2003. Water managers, scientists, artists, recreationists, ranchers, business leaders, educators, tribal members, elected officials, and other Colorado Watershed water users will meet with the group to offer their insights and perspectives on the river. Experiences gained by the students as they float the river, hike its canyons, and interact with local communities will enrich the writing and curriculum development process and build participant leadership skills. This bi-national expedition will foster partnerships between the U.S. and Mexico in education and resource management. Participating students will receive: *Payment for travel expenses *A $1,000 stipend *Four hours of upper-level college credit *Possible publication in Discover a Watershed: the Colorado Educators Guide *Opportunities to collaborate with experienced educators in the development of watershed-based, multi-disciplinary curriculum *A once-in-a-lifetime educational experience! Participants will be identified through a competitive application process to be completed by November 30, 2002. Applications will be sent to interested students during September - November, 2002. Our selection committee will review the applications and interview potential participants. Selected students will be notified by December 15, 2002. We are looking for students with the following qualities: *Motivated, passionate, enthusiastic students, interested in pursuing careers in formal or non-formal education (preferably juniors and seniors) *Outstanding communicators *Demonstrated commitment to rivers/watersheds/resource management *Team players *Strong belief in experiential education *Adventurous *Excellent writing skills *Sincerely support Project WET's core belief of water for all water users and non-biased educational approach *Represent the diversity of cultures in the Colorado Basin In addition to participation in the expedition, students will be required to attend a writing workshop from January 22nd-26th, 2003 (travel expenses to be paid by DAW: Colorado program). At the workshop they will collaborate with 50 educators and resource managers from throughout the basin to build the foundation for the Discover a Watershed: the Colorado Educators Guide. Students will also perform independent research on specified locations within the basin prior to the expedition, and will lead the group while touring that area. The expedition may also include volunteer community service work and/or scientific field research. The goal of the course/expedition is to provide the students with a life-changing outdoor experience, a broad-based understanding of the Colorado River basin, and experience in educational development and writing.
